[ingl.: May 29th 1898.
Friday Eve
My darling Carlos -
I have just read your dear good letter of the 5th inst I am surprised as well as dis couraged to hear you say that you have only read one letter from [corregido: me], I have ansd every one of your letters wich are 9 & not 15 as you stated in your letter of the 21st of March -
I took all of the letters to headquarters as you told me to do, & they have not sent them, that is all there {19 } is to it, so what is the use of me writing letters for other people to open & read & you never see them? In my last letter I told you my condition, which is deplorable in the extreme, & I will not repeat it. I am still at the old residence & have not paid any rent since you wnet away– Aunt M– is just as bad off as myself & does not give me a penny, Were it not for the rent of my two rooms I certainly would starve
My dear Father died on the 6th inst, & wanted to see me, but I could not to save my life raise the car fore to go & see him, he is now gone forever, & I wish I were as happy as he. I am glad I went to see him last summer I had to give another mortgage on my furniture & every day I expect to be sold out at auction as I do not think these people will let me stay after the first of June Ah! Carlos come back, I am brokenhearted do not stay till that old war ends which may last for years–
& then I will be dead & gone, to the ghost land
Good bye dear Carlos, I hope you will get this, if you do, them I will be more incouraged to write you a good letter Ever your dear affectionate loving old “Pickwick”]
